With summer that just started, many of us are eager to refresh our wardrobe with a new pair of sunglasses. However, finding the perfect pair can sometimes be tricky, as not all sunglasses fit every face type. This article offers a helpful guide to finding sunglasses that complement your unique facial features. We will first dive deeper into the different types of face shapes that exist, after which we will give recommendations for each face shape.

Understanding different face shapes

While it sounds complicated, finding sunglasses that fit your face shape is far from rocket science. It all starts with identifying your unique facial structure. To do this, pull your hair back to reveal your
face's full outline. Take note of the widest part—is it your jawline, cheeks, or forehead? This observation typically provides the primary indication of your face shape.

Additionally, consider factors such as the shape of your jaw—whether it's round, angular, or pointed—and the length of your face, distinguishing between long and short proportions. In general, four types of
face shapes can be identified. We will now go deeper into each face shape.

Different face types

1. Round

A round face shape is defined by soft, curved lines and a circular appearance. Your face is widest from cheek to cheek and becomes slightly narrower at your forehead and jawline. Typically, your chin is aligned with your jaw, completing the round contour of your face.

2. Square

A square face shape is defined by a strong, angular jawline and approximately equal proportions in width and length. The forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are often similar in width, creating a distinct square appearance.

3. Oval

Your face, with an oval shape, is slightly longer than it is wide, meaning the length from the top of your forehead to your chin exceeds the width from ear to ear. This balanced proportion is characterized by gently rounded edges, with cheekbones typically being the widest part.

4. Heart-shaped

A heart-shaped face is characterized by a broader
forehead and narrower jawline, resembling an inverted triangle. The forehead is the widest part of the face, tapering down to a pointed chin. Cheekbones may be prominent, adding to the overall angular appearance.

Recommended styles for each shape

ROUND FACES

Generally, the rule of thumb for finding flattering sunglasses is that they have a shape that is the opposite of your face shape. For example, square sunglasses are most flattering for a round face. Angular lines and edges balance the roundness of your face, so avoid anything with soft lines and rounded corners. When looking for sunglasses, look for rectangular frames with sharp edges or four corners, preferably thinner frames.

SQUARE FACES

For square faces, round and rimless frames are your best bet. These styles soften your strong features, balancing out sharp jawlines and square foreheads. Opt for round or oval sunglasses for a flattering look that complements your face shape perfectly.

HEART-SHAPED FACES

Go for frames that mimic your face shape, such as cat-eyes or aviators. These frames are wider at the top and narrower at the bottom (like heart faces), so they emphasize your best features. However, balance is important in proportions. If you have soft features, choose smaller and thinner frames; if you have strong features, you can go for the thicker or larger frames.

OVAL FACES

In this case, it's best to try a round shape of frame. Round sunglasses tend to be wider, which helps to balance the length of an oval face shape. Smaller frames can accentuate a narrow face, so oversized styles are the most flattering option to give the illusion of more width from cheekbone to cheekbone.
